Attendance & Punctuality

Good school attendance gives your child the opportunity of success and helps develop academic and social skills for life

‘Absences - authorised as well as unauthorised can add up to academic trouble’

There is much research to prove the link between attendance and achievement and therefore it is very important that your child attends school every day unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Prevention

We are proactive in preventing poor attendance by having clear policies and procedures from Reception to Year 6. We create an exciting and welcoming learning environment where every child feels they belong.

Early Intervention

If your child's attendance starts to cause concern, we will intervene early. We will work together to understand any issues and boost their attendance before it impacts their learning.

Targeted Support

Where necessary, we provide specific, targeted support. We will agree on a joint, tailored approach to overcome any challenges and help all children achieve good attendance.

Working Together

We are committed to working with you to maintain or improve your child’s good attendance. If you have any concerns regarding punctuality or attendance, please email the school office and ask for our Home School Link Worker, Natasha Munro to make contact with you.

Your child’s attendance is monitored closely by the school. Here are some actions that we may take to improve your child’s attendance together.

Attendance Procedures

  • The school gates and classrooms are open from 8.30am each day.
  • Registration is at 8.50am.
  • Children should be in their classroom no later than 8.50am. After this time children will need to enter school through the main entrance and they will be marked as late.
  • If your child is unable to come to school due to illness the school must be notified by 9am on every day of absence.
  • Please report absence by completing our online form or by calling 01784 253233 Option 1 and leaving a message.
  • We ask for a specific reason to be provided, rather than “not well”.
  • Please try to make medical or dental appointments outside of school hours.
  • Proof must be shown for any absences due to medical or dental appointments. No absence will be authorised without it.
  • The Exceptional Leave of Absence form must be completed for all school absence (not illness) before the absence can be considered for authorisation by a Headteacher. All absence (not illness) will be marked as unauthorised until approved by a Headteacher.
  • Penalty Notices will be sought for all unauthorised holidays and patterns of poor attendance over a period of time.

Illness

It can be tricky deciding whether or not to keep your child off school when they're unwell. There will be times when it is obvious that your child is simply too unwell to come to school, such as sickness or diarrhoea.

Please refer to the government guidelines on whether your child is too ill for school.

Please be assured that your child’s health and well-being is of the utmost importance to us.  If we feel a child should not be in school because they’re too unwell we will contact you with a view to sending them home.
