Modern Foreign Languages

MFL Statement of intent
Learning a language opens a world of new possibilities and opportunities. It offers children a broader perspective of the world around them, encouraging them to recognise their own cultures and those of others. Moreover, it helps them to develop their ability to communicate, including key skills of speaking and listening, all underpinned by their English linguistic skills. Language development at Echelford lays the foundation for future language learning, providing the potential for children to live, learn and work in other countries. The lessons aim at promoting curiosity towards foreign languages and bring awareness of similarities and differences with the English language. The pupils are encouraged to play with words and grammar and build on previous learning to develop independence in creatively using the language to once unique need and purpose. There is an emphasis and listening and speaking skills to prevent inhibition and promote oral confidence.
