28/11/25

This week, Year 6 have been immersing themselves in their descriptive writing from the perspective of a bug, including a range of cohesive devices to make their writing exciting. We started our fractions topic in maths, finding equivalent fractions and comparing and ordering unit fractions and non-unit fractions. We had our cricket coach from Surrey Foundation join us again on Tuesday for PE, where Year 6 had the opportunity to practice their throwing and catching skills, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The Year 6’s have been working hard to prepare for our assessment week next week.

This week, Year 6 have enjoyed getting back into the swing of things after returning from an action-packed residential in Bristol. In Maths, we have delved into the exciting world of algebra: learning how to describe linear number sequences and expressing these algebraically to find the nth term. In Literacy, we constructed our own set of instructions on ‘How to Build a Bug Hotel’ - taking inspiration from our Power of Reading text: A Brilliant Book of Bugs. We also began rehearsing our songs for the upcoming Christmas performance!

This week, the Year 6 children who remained at Echelford have been busy researching the local area of Ashford and creating eye-catching posters to promote the town. To consolidate their Geography learning, the children investigated the various symbols used in Ordnance Survey maps and explored where to plot them. In PE, the children took part in their first cricket session, learning all the basic skills from a qualified cricket coach. As part of Anti-Bullying Week, the children composed their own acrostic poem, working collaboratively for inspiration and rhyming words.

The children have had a great week together and we all look forward to welcoming back the rest of the year group from Bristol.

Year 6 has had an action-packed first week back after half-term! On Wednesday, we ventured over to Bedfont Lakes Country Park in support of our Geography learning where we: conducted surveys by asking members of the public questions, tested and recorded soil compaction, carried out emotional mapping and worked together during an orienteering session in the afternoon. We then spent Thursday and Friday organising our data into pie charts and bar graphs, presenting and explaining our findings.

Year 6 have had a great final week of our first half term of the year! On Monday, the children travelled back to London 1939,  as Neville Chamberlain announced the beginning of WW2. The children immersed themselves in a range of activities including: Fitness Bootcamp, Codebreaking and Research Presentations. In Literacy, we wrote detailed recounts of our visit from Mr. Green as well as our WW2 curriculum day - we then turned these events into a newspaper article for the Echelford Echo. In DT, we have been finishing off our lighthouse creations, adding a complete circuit within our structures to test out our designs.

This week, Year 6 delved into their first assessment week of the year! The children showed determination during their daily papers; remaining resilient during tricker or unfamiliar problems. They should all be incredibly proud of themselves! We also began the construction of our lighthouses in DT - using accurate measuring, painting and cutting techniques to enhance the presentation of our structures.

This week in Year 6, the children put their presenting skills to the test when articulating a balanced argument to debate the question: Should the lighthouse be destroyed?, drawing on their Power of Reading text: Letters from the Lighthouse and their knowledge of WW2. The children spent time writing their balanced arguments before presenting to a range of their peers across the year group, ensuring they incorporated their Oracy skills to enhance their presentation. In Maths, we have wrapped up our multiplication and division unit with the formal long division method and applied our range of KS2 knowledge to some arithmetic and reasoning questions. In Computing, we continued to explore with our new coding software: Lego Sprite, testing algorithms to achieve our goal.

This week, Year 6 have been continuing our learning and consolidating our understanding of multiplication and division - securing our long multiplication method and using derived facts. In Literacy, we developed our expanded noun phrases into a descriptive paragraph about a lighthouse, including cohesive devices such as fronted adverbials and conjunctions as well as creating our own non-chronological report all about lighthouses! On Wednesday, we were visited by WW1 and WW2 enthusiast Mr. Green who excitedly shared his wonderful collection of memorabilia which also included some original artefacts from the battlefield!

Year 6 has had a fantastic week! In Literacy, we have continued reading our Power of Reading text: Letters from the Lighthouse; using the current chapters to compose a letter to ‘Olive’ - giving her encouragement as she faces evacuation. In Maths, we have consolidated our knowledge of factors and multiples which will continue to support us as we continue our learning on multiplication and division. On Wednesday, we had a visit from Eduthing who showcased a range of robotics equipment - we had a great time testing these out!

This week, Year 6 delved into the world of poetry when writing their own acrostic poems inspired by images from Rose Blanche. The children explored a range of figurative language including: alliteration, similes and metaphors to enhance their piece. In Maths, we have been consolidating our addition and subtraction strategies and applying these to a range of problems. The children also had the opportunity to be elected for the role of House Captain and we were incredibly impressed with the speeches of those who put themselves forward for the role. Our Prefect duties also started this week and the children have enjoyed their new responsibilities around school.

12/09/25

Year 6 have had an excellent first week back and have settled into life in Year 6 beautifully; modelling our Green Values and embodying what it means to be positive role models. In Literacy, we began exploring our new text, Rose Blanche, where the children wrote detailed recounts from the perspective of different characters and developed their ideas through reading. In Maths, we continued to recap and extend our understanding of place value with 7-digit numbers, ordering and comparing these. The children also had the opportunity to be elected for the exciting role of Senior Prefect as well as assigning our first round of Prefect duties for the Autumn term.

Spellings: words with a range of prefixes and suffixes. For example: ‘cial’ and ‘tial’ (Official, Crucial, Essential, Potential)
