Diversity

Diversity at Echelford

At our school, celebrating diversity is central to who we are and how we learn together. We believe that every child’s background, culture, identity and experience enriches our community and helps to shape a school where everyone feels valued, respected and safe to be themselves. By recognising and embracing difference, we are not only reflecting the world our children live in, but also preparing them to be kind, curious and confident citizens who can thrive in a diverse society. Diversity strengthens our sense of belonging allowing us to grow together as a community so that everyone is valued and thrives.  It teaches our pupils the importance of respecting everyone while being kind to all. All in line with our Echelford Green Values.

Curriculum

At Echelford, we recognise how important it is to provide a curriculum where every child can see themselves reflected in their learning, while also gaining insight into, and understanding of, the lives of others. Directly linked to our curriculum themes of Celebrating Difference and Diverse Heroes, our curriculum is intentionally designed to be diverse, inclusive and representative of the vibrant world we live in.

We know that books are powerful tools for building identity and empathy. We have carefully selected our power reading texts, storytime texts and school library books to represent a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. Through this, we celebrate the richness of different traditions and languages and ensure children see themselves represented through the characters and experiences they read about. Our books also reflect diverse family circumstances, recognising and celebrating the many different shapes a “family” can take.

By providing these opportunities, we ensure our pupils feel a deep sense of belonging and develop a genuine respect for the diversity of other people’s experiences.

Inclusivity is not only found in the books we read; it is woven into the fabric of every subject we teach through the diverse heroes we learn about and the differences we celebrate. For instance, in history we explore a broad narrative of the past, highlighting the contributions and experiences of individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds and social movements that have shaped our global society. In science, our pupils learn about a wide array of scientists—past and present—from different genders and cultures, demonstrating that discovery and innovation belong to everyone. Likewise, through our arts subjects, we celebrate the work of artists, musicians and designers from across the globe.

Our curriculum aim is simple: to provide a curriculum where every child feels represented and is able to recognise and celebrate the differences that make our world wonderful.

Celebration of Us Week

Our annual Celebration of Us week is a vibrant highlight of the Echelford calendar, dedicated to honouring the rich diversity that makes our school community so unique. Throughout this immersive week, children explore the world through the lenses of different cultures, global cuisines and various family structures, while also gaining hands-on experience with Paralympic sports to champion inclusion and perseverance.

Each year follows a special theme, with past favourites including We Are Echelford, Where in the World? and the delicious Echelfood Festival. These themes are designed to broaden horizons and foster empathy. The festivities culminate in our spectacular Proud Parade, where the entire school community gathers to cheer as children joyfully showcase their new learning and creative projects.

Please see the attached Echelfood Recipe Book, created by each class. Why not try some of these recipes at home?

Here is our We Are Echelford performance poem, where pupils used their oracy skills to write and present poems all about themselves. Individually, we are all unique, but together, we are Echelford.

Diversity Heroes

At Echelford, we believe that our greatest strength lies in the beautiful array of backgrounds, talents and perspectives that each child brings through our gates. Our Diversity Heroes are at the heart of this mission, serving as passionate advocates for every member of our community. Led by three dedicated Year 5 Diversity Leads, this enthusiastic group meets monthly to explore creative ways to celebrate what makes us unique.

From championing different cultures and religions to highlighting the importance of visible and invisible disabilities, our Diversity Heroes ensure that every voice is heard and every identity is honoured. Whether discussing different family structures, beliefs or personal interests, they are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels a true sense of belonging.

The impact of the Diversity Heroes extends far beyond their meetings. Acting as a vital bridge between pupils, staff and families, they work closely with both the Teacher and Parent Diversity Groups to ensure our school’s vision for equality and equity is a shared journey. They remind us daily that when we embrace our differences, we become a stronger, more compassionate community.

Diversity Parent and Carer Forum

At Echelford, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every member of our community feels valued. Alongside our regular consultations with our Diversity Heroes, the Staff Diversity Team hosts termly Parent and Carer Forum meetings. These sessions take place in the After School Club room and begin at 9:00am.

Purpose of the Forum

The forum provides a valuable platform for stakeholders to come together and discuss diversity within our school community. These meetings offer opportunities to:

  • Collaborate: Share ideas to further develop Echelford’s diversity initiatives
  • Review: Discuss key events, such as our annual Celebration of Us week
  • Enhance: Evaluate the impact of changes made to our school environment and curriculum to ensure equity for all pupils

Community Involvement and Volunteering

We are always keen to welcome volunteers who can enrich our curriculum by sharing their unique experiences with our pupils. Parents and carers are warmly invited to speak to classes about:

  • Professional experiences and career pathways
  • Lived experiences relating to culture or identity
  • Linguistic knowledge and heritage

If you would like to contribute your time or expertise, please contact the school office to express your interest.
