Year 5 learning this week

This week, Year 5 have been refining their handwriting, and transferring these skills into their diary entries in the point of view of Katherine Johnson. In Maths, they have been developing their confidence using column addition and subtraction and using this method to begin solving word problems. In Reading Roundabout, they have been focussing on the VIPERS: Prediction. Whilst in DT, they have been cutting, painting and assembling their space orreries to create a structure that demonstrates the relative positions, sizes and orbital motions of the planets in our solar system.

It has been another busy and inspiring week in Year 5! In Literacy, taking inspiration from our Power of Reading text Hidden Figures, the children have stepped into the shoes of Katherine Johnson to craft thoughtful diary entries detailing her incredible achievements. They will continue to write, edit and enhance these next week. In Maths, we have been developing our addition and subtraction skills by exploring efficient strategies, including derived facts, the 'round and adjust' method, and formal column methods. Our Reading Roundabout sessions have focused on our inference skills, with the children learning to support their thoughts and opinions using evidence directly from the text. Finally, a huge well done to 5B for delivering our very first Year 5 class assembly on Wednesday! It was a wonderful gathering as a year group in the hall to celebrate their assembly, which beautifully connected our space topic with reaching for the stars and pursuing our own dreams and aspirations.

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 5! In Maths, the children have taken their place value knowledge even further by comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers all the way up to 1,000,000, as well as deepening their understanding of Roman numerals. Our Literacy lessons saw the pupils finish off their persuasive job adverts for a 'Human Computer' at NASA, before putting themselves in someone else’s shoes to write compelling cover letters applying for the role. Creative and leadership skills have also been shining bright: the children have begun planning their seasonal Christmas cards, and many have been thoughtfully preparing their speeches for the upcoming School Council and Diversity Hero elections. To top off a brilliant week, we visited the school library, where everyone had the opportunity to choose and loan their very first reading book of this academic year.

Year 5 has had a fantastic first week back to school! In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value by reading, writing, comparing and ordering 5-digit numbers, ready to build on this knowledge with 6-digit numbers next week. In Literacy, we have been inspired by our book Hidden Figures, learning about the incredible lives and achievements of diverse heroes who worked at NASA. The children have used this inspiration to write their own job advert for a ‘human computer’. We have also been developing our Zones of Regulation toolkits, helping us to recognise and manage our emotions. The children have enjoyed being introduced to their new Primary Robins singing sessions and have made a brilliant start to PE, taking part in football, hockey and tag rugby. What a busy and exciting first week!
