Year 5 learning this week

Below you will find our weekly teaching and learning summary to find out how we develop and enrich your child's learning whilst they are with us.

Week ending What we have been learning about
23/10/25

Year 5 have had a lovely week this week. They have been finishing their orreries in DT: painting the planets, constructing the structure using wooden poles and cardboard and using hot glue guns to stick them together. It has been wonderful. And to cap off this half-term’s space topic, Year 5 enjoyed the visit of the Wonderdome on Thursday with much awe and wonder of this mobile planetarium and gazing at the infinite expanse of the universe. 

On top of this, Year 5 have been writing poems about the scientists they researched last week using figurative language; writing diaries about a day in the life of an Anglo-Saxon person and finishing Religion and World Views by learning about The Fall and humanities redemption. 

17/10/25

This week in Year 5, we have been learning to read timetables in Maths. The children have been using bus and train timetables in order to understand how they are used and why they are useful to understand. In Literacy, every child has been given a different female astronaut or astronomer to research and write a non-chronological report on. In Foundation this week, Year 5 have continued to make their orreries in DT as well as learning about different dynamics in Music and how to touch type and program more complex code in Scratch in Computing.

This week, Year 5 have been writing wonderful newspaper reports about the Apollo 11 Moon Landings. We have particularly been looking at what factual details to include and how to remain in the reporting style of writing without falling into a recount. Year 5 have also written up their reports in neat to publish and share with the rest of the year group. In Maths, Year 5 have been learning to interpret and understand line graphs and all the different ways to extract data from them. 

In foundation, we have started making our Orreries in DT so the children have started painting their planets and cutting their sticks.Next steps will be to cut out the cardboard and start glueing it all together.

This week, Year 5 have been working on addition and subtraction in Maths and have shown good fluency so have been developing their reasoning and problem solving skills. In Literacy, Year 5 have been writing narratives on the Apollo 11 Moon Landing building characters, setting and atmosphere and including dialogue while continuing to include learning from the last few weeks on fronted adverbs and expanded noun phrases.

In Foundation subjects, Year 5 have been continuing to learn various ball skills in PE such as catching, kicking and throwing using football, tag rugby and skills sessions as the way to do so.

26/09/25

This week Year 5 have been getting their creative juices flowing in Literacy by creating their own planet and writing a report about it - the children have been so enrapt with it with so much creativity and wonderful writing coming from it. In Maths, Year 5 have moved onto the second unit this year on addition and subtraction and building on their previous learning and taking it a step further. In foundation, Year 5 have continued with Science, learning about the Solar System and doing oracy presentations to each other about their research on one of the planets.

This week, Year 5 have been researching Katherine Johnson and understanding her role at NASA as a human computer and the barriers she had to overcome. Year 5 have written diaries as Katherine Johnson about a day in her life working at NASA. In Maths, the children have been extending their place value knowledge to six-digit numbers and Roman Numerals and improving their reasoning skills. In foundation, the children have started to think about their DT project to do with creating a model of the Solar System and continuing the Space topic in Science in learning about the Solar System and teaching each other about it.

A wonderful first week back in Year 5 and the children have settled so well it’s like they’ve been here a month. In Literacy, Year 5 have been learning about the amazing Mathematicians who helped with the calculations for the Moon Landings who were the forgotten heroes due to being black women. In Maths, Year 5 have been learning the next step of their place value learning when using 5-digit numbers. In foundation, Year 5 have been learning about children’s rights in PSHE, Anglo Saxon artefacts in History and they have been getting giddy with excitement with the first lesson in Science on the Earth in Space topic in starting to learn about the Solar System.
