Year 4 learning this week

Below you will find our weekly teaching and learning summary to find out how we develop and enrich your child's learning whilst they are with us.

Week ending What we have been learning about
16/10/26

Year 4 have enjoyed the last week of this half term! In Literacy, we have been finishing and sharing our comic book strips about The Iron Man. We have focused on using fronted adverbials to begin each sentence to help it to flow. Meanwhile, in Maths, we have been looking at distributive law and how to partition numbers to multiply. In Computing, we have been applying our skills of typing, using shift and copying and pasting to edit and create google docs and slides about our favourite things. It has been wonderful to share all this progress at Parent’s Evening this week and we are looking forward to being back after Halloween!

Spellings: Common Exception Words from our word mats

09/10/26

During our penultimate week before the half term, Year 4 enjoyed a school trip! On Tuesday, we navigated our way to Ashford train station using a map and noted different landmarks we saw enroute. In our Literacy, we have read another chapter of The Iron Man and have been using our oracy skills to retell the story before making a comic strip. In Maths, we are finishing our unit on addition and subtraction, applying our skills to one and two-step problems. We have enjoyed going to the Book Fair in our classes and having this open to us after school.

This week in Year 4, we have continued our writing on Iron Man, writing our very own newspaper report on the farmers who have been impacted by Iron Man’s return. In our Maths, we have been adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers using the column method, and subtracting from multiples of 1000. In Geography, we have been learning about maps and symbols, ready for our local walk to Ashford next week

25/09/26

This week, Year 4 have explored newspaper entries in Literacy, using our knowledge of The Iron Man to write about the iron giant leaving the sea. In Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of place value and applying this to methods of addition and subtraction. In PE, we have been developing our ball and fitness skills to support with playing games of tag rugby. In the afternoons, Year 4 have been designing and creating their Christmas cards ready to take home.

18/09/26

What an exciting week for Year 4! In Maths, we have been looking at place value and how this supports addition and subtraction. It has been wonderful to use our oracy skills during these lessons to build our mathematical reasoning. In Literacy, we have read more of The Iron Man and continued our predictions, discovering lots about this mysterious robot. But most excitingly, on Thursday we had our Windsor Castle trip and what a fantastic one it was. We saw the Changing of the Guard and inside St George’s Chapel as well as lots of the castle features we learnt in Year 3. It was wonderful to see these features in action during our workshop and then compare them to the real stone.

11/09/26

Year 4 has been settling back into school wonderfully and are really focusing on our mission of kindness. In Literacy, we have started reading one of our class texts, The Iron Man. We have used our oracy to explore what happens at the beginning and are starting to write diary entries of our predictions for the characters. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. This can be tricky so everyone should be so proud of how well they are approaching this topic. In Geography, we have been learning about Our Local Area and where to find it on the map. We have even looked at the symbols and what each one means!

Spellings: Words that are homophones: accept, except, knot, not, peace, piece, plain, plane, weather, whether
