Year 1 learning this week

As we head into our second-to-last week before half term, Year 1 has been working extraordinarily hard! We launched our new story, The Ugly Duckling, and the children have been retelling it with fantastic confidence in their writing. We’ve also been focusing on expanding our ideas by using 'and' to connect our sentences. In Maths, the children have been mastering subtraction by using number lines to help visualise counting backwards. This week in Rawv, we explored where different foods originate and discovered that many of our favorite foods travel from all around the world before reaching the UK! We even mapped out the journeys of various products. Lastly, in our Art lessons, to set the stage for our upcoming clay self-portraits, the children created beautiful landscape backdrops. Our journey through the nature book Slow Down continued this week as we discovered the life cycle of a frog! The children put their phonics skills to the test, carefully writing sentences dictated by their teachers. We kept our frog theme hopping in Maths, introducing the subtraction symbol by placing lily pads over frogs to "take them away." On Wednesday morning, we had some very special visitors! The Gingerbread Man and his crew dropped by to deliver a fantastic, lively performance that had everyone captivated. Finally, our Geography journey took us north to Scotland. We researched famous landmarks like Ben Nevis and Edinburgh Castle, listened to traditional bagpipes, and even designed our own colourful kilts.

What a busy and inspiring week we’ve had! We’ve been stepping into the crisp season of Autumn, writing about how trees change as the weather turns. The children worked hard on applying their full stops and punctuation to finish every sentence with care. In Maths, addition has been our core focus this week. We’ve been using part-part-whole models to visualise how numbers come together. Lots of creativity was seen as Year 1 rolled up their sleeves to sculpt clay self-portraits! They are currently drying and we are excited to see the finished result. Finally, in Computing we revisited essential online safety infomation—discussing who our trusted adults are and learning how to keep our personal information safe when using the internet.

This week, we kick-started our new nature-themed book, Slow Down, where the children put their fantastic oracy skills to work by discussing and saying out loud what they would bury in Autumn before putting pencil to paper. In Maths, numbers came to life on a massive floor number line as we explored one more and one less, while also practicing ordering our numbers correctly through a variety of creative activities. Science saw our little gardeners in action as they independently planted their own sweet pea seeds, which we are excited to watch (hopefully) grow over the coming weeks. Finally, during our energetic PE sessions, the children thoroughly enjoyed using lots of equipment to practice and refine their gymnastics skills.

We have had such an exciting and busy start to Year 1 this week! In Literacy, we loved exploring the story of The Gingerbread Man. The children came up with so many imaginative ways for him to cross the river, all while working hard to use clear finger spaces in their writing. Our Maths lessons have been just as active, with the children exploring number bonds to 10 using cubes, counters, and even building a giant human tens frame! Finally, we stepped outside for our new Art and Science topics. We had a wonderful afternoon hunting for natural materials to use in our upcoming artwork, which perfectly connected to our Science research about the amazing world of plants.
