Reception learning this week

Below you will find our weekly teaching and learning summary to find out how we develop and enrich your child's learning whilst they are with us.

Week ending What we have been learning about...
09/10/26

Our book this week has been ‘The colour monster’. We have learnt all about the different emotions that the colour monster feels and know that it is okay to feel any of these emotions. We have talked about how we can get ourselves back in the ‘green zone’ by e.g. taking deep breaths, going for a walk, playing with a fidget toy and the children have all discussed the ways in which these might help them. In Maths, we have been looking at ‘more’ and ‘less’ and identifying which group has the most. We have continued our subitising and the children are really good at this with the numbers up to 5.

We also managed to visit the Forest School this week where we went on a dinosaur hunt and learnt about all of the things we can do there. We have also welcomed parents into the classrooms to spend some time with their children and join in some activities. We hope you enjoyed your time.

Reception classes have continued to explore the topic of dinosaurs. This week we have read a story called Dear Dinosaur by Nicola O’Byrne about a boy who writes letters, postcards and emails to a dinosaur. The children have even received a letter from Daisy the dinosaur asking them what their favourite activities are. In maths the children have been subitising numbers from 1 to 4, matching objects to numbers and even completed a number hunt outside.

In Literacy this week we have been reading ‘The Worrysaurus’ and looking at how the dinosaur’s emotions change through the story, from being in the green zone (happy) to yellow (worried) to blue (sad, tired) to red (angry). We have discussed all of these emotions and thought of ways that we can get back into the green zone - e.g. taking deep breaths, going for a walk, having a drink etc.

In Maths we have been singing number songs to 10 and looking at the composition of a number. We have thought of different ways we can make 3 e.g. 1+1+1, 2+3 or 3+0.

We decorated our own ‘worry’ cups where we can put any of our worries inside and we also explored using glue and tissue paper to make dinosaur collages.

The Reception children continue to impress us with how well they are settling into school life. This week they have listened to the story of ‘Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs go to school’. They have discussed ways in which they could be a good friend and described what dinosaurs look like.

In Maths, they have been looking at the numbers 1, 2 and 3 and learning how to subitise (say the amount without counting).

They have helped to rescue dinosaurs frozen in ice and thought about ways that would make the ice melt quicker including warming it in their hands, pouring hot water onto it, putting it under the sun or dropping it from a height to smash the ice.

11/09/26 The Reception children have had a great few days settling into their new classes. They have enjoyed a Teddy Bears’ Picnic with their carers and have explored all the different areas both inside and outside the classroom. They did so well, staying for lunch and even being at school all day. All the adults have been super impressed with how brilliantly they have done.
