Year 3

Welcome to Key Stage Two! Year 3 is an exciting year where children begin their upper school journey, building upon the skills and knowledge previously learned whilst developing as independent learners.

Throughout this year, the children are exposed to exciting topics as we bring our Power of Reading texts to life. We start our adventure by becoming mountaineers as we explore areas of our world in greater detail, drawing upon our knowledge of continents from Year 2. We then travel back in time to discover the ancient worlds of the Stone Age and Egypt. We also discover the underground world as we read Krindlekrax and explore our local area with increasing accuracy and understanding. Finally, we delve into the world of farming as we read Charlotte’s Web and use our understanding of rural locations to think about how England has changed since the time of Robin Hood. With each topic area we have exciting curriculum days, including a sleepover to prepare for future residentials, which develop their understanding as well as a variety of skills including teamwork and problem solving.

Beyond our topics, this is also the first year where children have French lessons with a specialist Modern Languages Teacher, which provides further opportunities for children to discover hidden talents and new interests and skills. The children also get to put their musical skills to the test as they receive weekly music lessons led by a guitar specialist. Learning to play the guitar is an exciting and rewarding experience which leads up to a spectacular concert held at the end of the academic year. Parents and carers are invited to this performance where the children showcase all of their newly acquired musical skills.

Throughout Years 1-6 the learning is focused on mastering the end of year objectives set out in the 2014 National Curriculum. In Years 1 & 2 the children follow the Key Stage 1 programmes of study as outlined in the National Curriculum and in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 they follow the Key Stage 2 programmes. The National Curriculum for both key stages consists of the core subjects: Mathematics, English, Science and Computing; and the foundation subjects; History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art and Design, Music, and P.E. The Surrey Agreed Syllabus is used for the teaching of Religious Studies (R.S).

Children are taught in mixed ability classes throughout the school. They progress through the classes according to age except in very exceptional instances where the individual needs of the child make an alternative programme necessary.
