Relationships & Sex Education

Relationships and sex education is an integral part of the taught curriculum and is embedded within the Science and PSHE programmes of study. It is planned sensitively in order to ensure that children begin to know about and have some understanding of the physical, emotional and social changes that take place in their lives. At an early stage this involves being able to name body parts and develops to knowing the basic biology for human reproduction in KS2.

Parents/carers will always be informed when a planned programme of sex education is about to begin. Parents/carers are free to withdraw their children from specific sex education lessons which are non-statutory; these are lessons where human reproduction is taught. However, reproduction is also taught as part of the Science Curriculum; this is statutory and therefore parents cannot withdraw their children from this learning. Any parent/carer wishing to discuss this aspect of the curriculum in more detail should contact their child's class teacher or the PSHE Lead, via the school office.
