    Year 6 Life Skills Workshop

Learning life skills for our move to secondary school and into adulthood

During the morning on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd June, Year 6 were lucky enough to take part in a Life Skills workshop. We started by talking about what the word 'transition' means and how this is important to us at present. We had a discussion about a range of transitions but in particular, our impending move to secondary school.

The mornings were filled with activities that required us to use a range of skills that we will need on our journey to and throughout secondary school and adult life: teamwork and communication were key. The activities allowed us to collaborate with peers that we do not ordinarily have a chance to work with; this gave us an opportunity to come out of our comfort zones which is good preparation for our induction days in a couple of weeks’ time.

We really enjoyed working together to try and build the longest and strongest bridge out of just three resources: newspaper, sellotape and scissors. Another great thing that we learnt was how actions helps your brain to remember tricky things; we learnt to count to ten in Japanese and we used actions for each number, allowing our brains to remember each one. We concluded the session by reflecting on what we are really proud of and what our dream jobs would be.

From this workshop, we have gained far more confidence about the transition to secondary school. We would like to thank the Life Skills leaders for providing us with such a fantastic and purposeful experience.
